The Church of the Holy Sepulchre contains the two holiest sites in Christianity. Inside the sacred halls is Calvary, the site where Jesus was crucified for our sins. There is also Jesus’s empty tomb, the spot where He was buried and resurrected.

We can pray together from this ancient and spiritual church in Jerusalem.

The church is inside the Christian quarter of Jerusalem’s old city. The final four Stations of The Cross, or the Via Dolorosa, are enshrined here.

The Bible tells us that Jesus was crucified at Golgotha, “the place of the skull”. It was a stone quarry, just outside the city walls.

In 312 AD, the Roman Emperor Constantine had a vision of the Cross. He converted to Christianity after receiving the sign from God and sent his mother to search for Golgotha.

Empress Helen found a tomb that fit the Gospel’s description of the Calvary. All of the dirt and debris that had gathered with time and neglect was removed. A rock-cut tomb and a relic of the Cross were found underneath!

A church was built in 326 AD at the newly identified tomb of Jesus. The wooden doors at the main entrance are the same doors commissioned by Constantine over a thousand years ago.

Inside the church, a stairway leads up to the site of Jesus’ crucifixion. It is the most extravagant part of the Holy Sepulchre. Ornate gold decorates the place where Jesus died on the Cross.

“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” 1 Peter 2:24

The Stone of Anointing is at the entrance. This is where Christ’s body was prepared for His burial. A large mosaic behind it shows the anointing of Jesus’s body.

The 19th century Aedicule is a small chapel within the larger church. It has two small rooms, one is the Tomb of Jesus. In the other is the Angel’s Stone, a small piece of the stone that sealed Jesus’s tomb.

In May 2016, the Aedicule underwent precarious restorations. The $4 million dollar project started after the Israel Antiquities Authority declared the monumental structure unsafe.

The exact historical site of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection have been debated for centuries. The bible’s description of the Calvary gives us some clues. But modern Jerusalem does not have the same landscape, making it difficult to know for sure…

“Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). There they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.” John 19:17-18

In 300 AD, the location of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was identified as Golgotha. However, many years later, a new discovery uncovered another tomb that left many people wondering.

The Garden Tomb is a rock-cut tomb that was unearthed in 1867. The site has many similarities to the scenes depicted in the Bible. While some archaeologists say it is not from the same time period, it is widely accepted as the possible burial site of Jesus Christ.

Regardless of history, the Garden Tomb is a peaceful place of worship. Everyone can agree that it preserves a more traditional perception of what Calgary would have looked like.

Architecture alteration and time have changed the tomb at the crowded Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Because of that, many prefer the Garden Tomb for the feeling of being truly immersed into the events described in the Gospels.

Today, St. Peter’s Church is an easy one hour drive from Jerusalem. But hundreds of years ago, it would take pilgrims another three days to reach the Holy City. The church was built in 1654 on the top of a hill near the shore in Jaffa.

Jaffa was once the main port to the Holy Land. Christian pilgrims, from across the world, would first arrive here to reach Jerusalem. St. Peter’s Church, with its tall bell tower, used to be a beacon to these pilgrims. It was the hopeful signal that the Holy Land was near.

The church was originally part of a crusader fort and citadel. It was erected during the reign of Louis IX, King of France. A statue of King Louis IX stands in the courtyard of the church today.

On the right of the church, two rooms still remain of St. Louis’ fort. Historians believe these are the same rooms where French General Napoleon lived in 1799. Napoleon used the Holy Land as a base, while campaigning in Egypt and Syria.

During the 18th century, the church was destroyed and rebuilt twice. The St. Peter’s Church we know today was completed in 1894. Throughout the many lifetimes of this church, it has always been dedicated to St. Peter.

Jaffa is an important location for St. Peter in the bible. Here he raised Tabitha, one of Jesus’ disciples, from the dead.

“Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, “Tabitha, get up.” She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up. He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called for the believers, especially the widows, and presented her to them alive.” Acts 9:40-41

Today, St. Peter’s Church continues to welcome pilgrims from all over the world. There are weekly services in English, Spanish, Polish and even Hebrew.

Church of All Nations

The Church of All Nations sits at the base of the Mount of Olives. Right next to the church are eight ancient olive trees, growing old in the Garden of Gethsemane. One of the trees is over 2,000 years old. Local Christians believe it gave Christ shelter as He prayed the night before His crucifixion.

“And in His Anguish, He prayed more earnestly, and His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.” Luke 22:44

This holy site used to be called the Church of Agony. In the center of the church is the rock where Jesus stopped to pray, before He was arrested by Roman soldiers. Because of that, the original name of the church comes from the bible and His prayers of agony.

The current structure is built on top of the foundations of two earlier churches. The first, a 4th century basilica was destroyed in an earthquake in 746 AD. After that, crusaders built a church in the 12th century, but it was abandoned in 1345 AD.

The Church of All Nations was completed June 24th, 1924. During the renovations, a Greek inscription was found on the floor that reads, “for the memory and repose of the lovers of Christ… accept the offering of your servants and give them remission of sins”.

Money for the construction was donated from twelve different countries from around the globe. Of course, this is why we call it the Church of All Nations today.

It is the perfect place to make a unity prayer request. The building and the garden are maintained by the Roman Catholic Church, but it is regularly used by Christians of all denominations. Protestants, Evangelicals, Lutherans, Armenian Apostolic, Eastern Orthodox and more all worship in this church.

The multi-denomination use is culturally unique and hard to find anywhere else in the world. It is truly a Church of All Nations.

Dormition Abbey

This church and monastery are some of the many spiritual sites in Jerusalem. Christian prayers have been heard from this church, for hundreds of years.

The sacred building is outside the walls of Jerusalem’s old city, next to Zion gate. Even if you are physically far from Jerusalem, you can still make a special prayer request from Dormition Abbey.

Both today and in the past, the church has been an icon of the Jerusalem skyline. Dormition Abbey was even featured on a mosaic of the Holy City made in the 6th century AD.

The church was first built by the Bishop of Jerusalem, John II, in the 5th century AD. But the building we pray from today is not the same one. The church was destroyed and rebuilt, more than once.

It is a story of hope. The ancient Christians of Jerusalem did not lose faith. Because of their conviction to God, we can still pray together in Dormition Abbey.

Today, the church in Jerusalem was commissioned by the German Kaiser, Wilhelm II. Ottoman rulers gave the Kaiser a plot of land on Mount Zion when he visited the Holy Land in 1898 AD. It took twelve years to build.

The name of the church has always remained the same, although sometimes translated into different languages. It was built near the site of Jesus’s last supper and where the Blessed Virgin Mary died.

The name dormition means “falling asleep”. Until today, the church is honored with commemorating where Mary “fell asleep” and where her body and soul were taken to heaven.

I had heard of the power of an online prayer request but did not believe much in its strength till one day, I decided to send one and seek God’s divine grace.

We were all happy as well as exhausted. My family and I had just spent the last week having a relaxing and blissful holiday abroad. Although I scanned the newspapers every morning and did my fair share of catching up on the latest happenings worldwide, I did not pay much attention to the growing pandemic of Coronavirus. After all, we were on our much-awaited holiday and wanted to make the most of our break. Moreover, the newspapers did not say much about whether Coronavirus had reached the city where we lived or the one where we were holidaying. So there really wasn’t much to rattle my nerves or get worried about my family. I decided to enjoy my holidays to the hilt and let the news reports take a back seat for the time being.

The day of our return flight dawned near. On our way to the airport, while we were waiting at a traffic signal, the cab driver turned on the radio. The newsreader was relaying how the deadly Coronavirus was quickly spreading and endangering the lives of everyone. The news hardly mattered to me because we were heading home and there were no reports of any cases being positive in our city. We reached the airport and, after the formalities were over, we all headed to the lounge for a cup of coffee. It was here that I heard some passengers discuss how fast Coronavirus was being detected all over the world and the preventive measures and advisories being broadcast all over the media. I logged in to my email and found that it had been flooded with messages issued in the public interest by our government and how to take precautionary measures to stay safe. My Facebook page was inundated with posts of new cases being detected and how people were getting paranoid about the situation by the day. Still, I brushed aside these reviews and proceeded to board my flight.

The flight attended handed each one of us a small bottle of hand sanitizer and asked everyone to use it diligently. This seemed a bit strange as I had never seen anything like this before. Still, my family and I decided to follow the instructions as there was no harm in doing it. Personal hygiene was always on top of my mind, particularly when it came to my 3-year-old kid.

Our flight landed on time. We were all exhausted after the long flight and wanted to reach home as quickly as possible. As we started collecting our luggage, we noticed that there was a commotion at the other end of the airport. This section of the departure lounge was full of passengers who had disembarked from international flights. We collected our luggage and were about to head out when we were stopped by security guards. One of the guards checked our passports and asked us to follow him. We went with him and found ourselves joining the queue of people who had come from abroad. The guard explained to us that we would be quarantined like the other passengers and tests would be conducted for Coronavirus. We could only leave the airport if the test results were negative. We were whisked away to a segregated segment of the airport and kept in isolation. After a few hours, swabs were collected from our nose and throat and sent to a laboratory for analysis. We were told that it would take 24-72 hours for the results to come back.

I had already hit the panic button and started praying for my family. My husband told me to be strong but I was more concerned for my child than anyone else. I remembered that a cousin had sent an online prayer request and was able to tide over a crisis at a crucial period in her life. I shared my thoughts with my husband who readily agreed o send an online prayer request to a church in the Holy Land and seek His blessings. When we received an email with the photographs and video of our prayer request against coronavirus, we felt a surge of relief. Although we waited anxiously for the results, our turbulent mind was calm.

The test results came back after three days. All three of us had tested negative and the authorities told us that we were free to go home. We hugged each other and tears of joy flowed down my cheeks. The Lord had answered our prayers and blessed us with His divine touch. In my heart, I knew the power of an online prayer request and how it can show us the path in the most trying times.

The Prayer That Saved My Life

We have read various accounts of Christ’s miracles and how His healing touch cured the devout. But how many of us have experienced these miraculous happenings in our lives? In today’s age of nuclear medicine and the latest advances in surgery and methods of treatment, should we turn to the Supreme Power or simply believe in the advancement of science? Such thoughts cloud our mind time and again. And I was no exception. I had heard about how people who are unable to visit holy places send a prayer request for the sick to a place of their choice or send a prayer request to Israel, but I didn’t give it much thought till a life-altering ailment shattered my very existence.

I had lost my mother a month ago and was trying to come to terms with my loss. I had stopped going out with my friends and refused to be a part of any social or family gatherings; I hated the look of sympathy in people’s eyes. Their words of comfort made me more miserable and wallow in self-pity. I would feel restless and wanted to spend time alone. I had forgotten to live, I merely existed.

One day, I noticed a small lump on my breast. I didn’t think much about it and chose to ignore it. Within a short span of time, I noticed that more lumps had developed. I confided in my maternal aunt, who told me to consult my family physician immediately. I was referred to an oncologist who asked me to undergo tests. My worst fears came true when the test results confirmed that I had breast carcinoma. I had always been a Believer and faithful follower of the Lord, but the first question that came to my mind was: “Why me, God?” I was only 26 years old and had always led a disciplined life. Then how could this happen to me of all people? Neither of my parents had a family history of carcinoma. No one in my family had ever succumbed to the dreadful disease. I kept asking God: “How could I, of all people, be diagnosed with cancer?” Why were mishaps occurring in my life in quick succession?

Although the Scripture advises us to pray, all I wanted to do was cry out to God in despair; but words failed me as I tried to pray. My aunt, who had been a pillar of strength, suggested that I consider sending a prayer request to Israel. This gave rise to more questions in my mind. Does God heal everyone? Why are some people bereft of His healing touch? Will my prayers be answered? Will I be able to receive His healing balm? Although I had been diagnosed with carcinoma, my oncologist had advised further tests to confirm and diagnose the stage of cancer and prepare a plan of treatment. My aunt told me of a few acquaintances who had sent a prayer for the sick and received His blessings. As it was not possible for me to undertake a pilgrimage to the Holy Land due to my health, as well as expenses involved, I decided to give it a thought. With a lot of trepidation in my heart, I surfed the Internet to choose a church and send a prayer request to Israel. I decided to surrender myself to the Lord and trust Him completely to deliver me from my state of hopelessness.

I had never felt so helpless in my life until this juncture, but I had nothing to lose as I turned to the Eternal Power. A few days later, I received a confirmation of acceptance of my prayer request to Israel at the church that I had chosen. I received a video of my prayer request for the sick and felt a glimmer of hope in my body, mind, and spirit. My test results confirmed that, although I had been diagnosed with breast carcinoma, it was in the early stages. As I heaved a sigh of relief, a sense of gratitude filled my mind and heart. I still needed surgery and several weeks of radiotherapy, but I was renewed with the courage to fight and win my battle against the disease.

Many times we face such a predicament in life or see our near and dear ones suffering physically and mentally. Physicians and medicines can provide relief to our bodily ailments, but we need to turn to the Supreme Power for inner healing. Church of the Holy Sepulchre

This church, also known as the Church of the Anastasis or the Church of the Resurrection, is located within the Old City of Jerusalem. The holy site is significant as it is believed to be the site where Christ was crucified; it also houses Christ’s empty tomb. In 325 AD, Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor, built the church; Constantine’s mother Helena discovered the “True Cross”. It is widely believed that the Stone of Anointing marks the spot where Joseph of Arimathea prepared Christ’s body for burial. The main altar contains the Rock of Calvary; it is the most visited spot in the church. Traditionally, the Calvary is believed to be the site of Christ’s crucifixion. Garden Tomb

The Golgotha or “the place of the skull” is believed to be the site of Christ’s crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. Further excavations have revealed religious markings (signs of Christian Burials) dating back to the days of Christ. An anchor-cross on the outside wall and a cross carved into the rock face above the tomb were discovered. Two painted crosses were found inside the tomb with Byzantine markings dating back to the 5th or 6th centuries; the crosses were accompanied by Greek letters which referred to Christ as the Alpha and Omega. Church of All Nations

There are olive trees dating back hundreds of years at this holy site; popular belief suggests that these trees stood witness when Christ prayed in mortal pain on the eve of his Passion. The lunette in the apse features a mosaic depicting Christ in agony being comforted by an Angel. The side apses have mosaic representations of incidents of Christ’s Passion like the Arrest of Jesus and the Kiss of Judas. Abbey of the Dormition

This German Byzantine monastic church is situated on top of Mount Zion. It is said to be the site of the Virgin Mary’s “dormition” or “falling asleep” and ascension to heaven. The dome, floor, and walls are decorated with mosaics depicting the Prophets and Apostles. St. Peter’s Church

This church faces the West, as opposed to most other churches, which face East. The site where the Roman Catholic Church of St. Peter is situated has been revered as a Christian center for more than a thousand years. A church and an inn for pilgrims were constructed here in the 16th century, probably on the ruins of another church. The construction of the present church was finished in 1894. There is a wooden pulpit inside the church carved in the form of a fruiting tree. The arms of Christ and Francis are crossed over the Tau Cross. Below the Franciscan Cross is the cross of the Holy Land, a Greek cross in red with a white background and four similar crosses, one in each quadrant; it is also known as the “Jerusalem Cross”. In Aramaic, Peter’s name is referred to as Cepha, the word for “rock”; legend goes that Christ had told St. Peter at Banias that he is the “rock” upon which his church would be built. Sacraments. Do we really know what their meanings are?

What is the difference between the sacraments of the dead and the sacraments of the living?

The Basic

According to the Catholic Culture Dictionary, Sacraments are defined as, “Those sacraments which can be validly and fruitfully received when a person is not in the state of grace. They are baptism, penance, and, if needed, anointing of the sick. These sacraments confer or restore sanctifying grace and confer actual graces when received by one who is already in God’s friendship”.

Sacraments of the Dead

“Amen, amen, I say to thee, unless a man be born again of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God”.
(John 3:5)

In death, we want to enter into God’s Kingdom. With Baptism and Penance, we are preparing our spirit to receive God’s blessing to achieve his approval. Therefore, they are called the Sacraments of the Dead

Sacraments of the living

Confirmation, Holy Eucharist, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony are called sacraments of the living because their chief purpose is to give more grace to souls already spiritually alive through sanctifying grace.

Jesus Christ’s signs

Getting into Heaven is our goal, according to Matthew 6:25-33. One must have Sanctifying Grace in their soul when one dies to enter Heaven. Sanctifying Grace is God’s life in the soul and is chiefly obtained through the Seven Sacraments. A Sacrament is an outward sign made by Jesus Christ to give one grace. An outward sign is anything one can see, hear, or feel, which tells one about something one cannot see. Each Sacrament is a direct encounter with Christ, who is the One who really gives the Sacrament. Christ gave His Church only the essential parts of each Sacrament; the Church has surrounded each Sacrament with a ceremony.
