Holy Cross Day Celebration in the Holy Lands

Holy Cross Day celebrates the return of the Holy Cross to the city of Jerusalem. The Cross, originally captured by the Persians, could be recovered only in A.D. 628. The church celebrates this day on September 14 every year. Holy Cross Day commemorates the ultimate sacrifice made by Lord Jesus Christ by dying on the Cross so that we can attain salvation.

Holy Cross Day- Background

September 14 is celebrated as the Holy Cross Day as it was on the same day when the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was assigned on the site of the Lord’s crucifixion in Jerusalem. Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, had come across some broken pieces of Holy Cross. She discovered these pieces in 326 CE while on a pilgrimage.

It is believed that the Jews had concealed the Holy Cross in a well or a ditch. They had hidden the Cross with stones over it so that the believers would not chance upon it and revere it. However, very few Jews knew about its exact location. Judas, one of these Jews, was influenced by Divine inspiration and revealed the location to a group of excavators.

St. Helena was full of praises for Judas. Later on, Judas went on to become a famous Christian Saint and was referred to as Cyriacus. Emperor Constantine and St. Helena built a stunning basilica after this stunning revelation.

Holy Cross Day- Celebration

A liturgical feast is celebrated on September 14 every year to show reverence to the Cross on which Lord Jesus Christ was crucified. The Eastern Church calls it “The Exaltation of the Holy Cross”. The Roman Catholic Church embraced the celebration in the 7th century. The Church refers to the feast as “The Triumph of the Cross”. Today, the day is also observed in different Protestant traditions such as Anglicanism and Lutheranism.

According to Eastern Orthodox practice, the day is observed as a fast day. Followers are expected to observe a strict fast. Although it is alright to eat oil, consumption of fish, dairy products, and meat is prohibited. Fasting is not part of any form of legalistic requirements. Rather, we fast for reducing our consumption so that there is something that can be shared with others. We also fast to make space for the presence of God through our prayers and for simplifying our lives.

On this day, the Church holds a special service. The Cross is surrounded by basil branches and put on a tray. The tray is then taken in a grand procession through the Church. Hymns are chanted when the procession is on.

Holy Cross Day- Significance

The Holy Cross is a symbol of the victory of Lord Jesus Christ over death. The day is also a celebration of the transformation of a heinous instrument of torture into a seraphic “tree of life”. The celebration of Holy Cross Day brings rays of hope to mankind. It is also a representation of the sacrifices made by Christ for the salvation of humankind.

As mentioned earlier, the day also celebrates the discovery of the True Cross by St. Helena in the holy world.

Miracle Prayer Request – Miracle Walk at Mount Tabor

The Miracle Walk is a unique prayer ceremony, performed for special prayer requests only, on the top of Mount Tabor, the holy site of the Transfiguration of Jesus, the greatest miracle of all. Please read this explanation before submitting your prayer request.

The Transfiguration of Jesus: The Greatest Miracle

The Transfiguration of Jesus is an event where Jesus is transfigured and becomes radiant in glory – like the sun – upon Mount Tabor.

Jesus and three of His apostles – Peter, James, and John – go to pray on a mountain, later referred to as the Mount of Transfiguration and identified as Mount Tabor in the Holy Land.

On the mountaintop, while praying, Jesus begins to shine with bright rays of light. Then the Biblical figures Moses and Elijah appear next to Him and He speaks with them. Jesus is then called “Son” by the voice of God the Father.

The transfiguration is one of the miracles of Jesus in the Gospels. This miracle is unique among others that appear in the canonical gospels, in that the miracle happens to Jesus Himself. Thomas Aquinas considered the transfiguration “the greatest miracle” in that it complemented baptism and showed the perfection of life in Heaven.

For The Salvation Garden, as a praying community, the Transfiguration miracle has a unique importance, as it happened during prayer and the voice of God was heard on the top of the mountain.

In Christian teachings, the transfiguration is a pivotal moment, and the setting on Mount Tabor is presented as the point where human nature meets God: the meeting place of the temporal and the eternal, with Jesus Himself as the connecting point, acting as the bridge between heaven and earth.

Mount Tabor: Where Miracles Happen

Since the 3rd century, most Christians have identified Mount Tabor as the site of the Transfiguration of Jesus.

At the eastern end of the Jezreel Valley, Mount Tabor is shaped almost like half a sphere, suddenly rising from rather flat surroundings and reaching a height of 575 meters (1,886 feet), thus dominating by a good 450 meters the the plain below.

Mount Tabor, in the North of the Holy Land, has long been a place of Christian pilgrimage. Until today, Mount Tabor is the site of the Church of Transfiguration.

When in need of a miracle – a personal miracle, a healing miracle, or any other celestial help – believers travel far to visit Mount Tabor and pray.

The Miracle Walk Ceremony: Prayer Request for a Miracle

Following the footsteps of several pilgrims and stories of great miracles, the Miracle Walk Ceremony was developed.

Pilgrims can walk the same grounds upon which Jesus went through the Transfiguration and pray. In this holy site, where the greatest miracle of all occurred, believers feel as if the prayer reaches further into Heaven.

The Salvation Garden team performs this unique prayer ceremony, the Miracle Walk, walking on the top of Mount Tabor, praying at the holy site where miracles happen.

The spring season is just starting in the Holy Land and a perfect warm and sunny weather welcomed our special delegation to Capernaum. We traveled to the North of Israel to pray for our community members from around the world. The selected location was specifically selected by Jesus over 2,000 years ago.

Carrying with us your Holy Land prayer requests, We began the day early in the morning at Chorazin, a ancient settlement also mentioned in the Bible. The antique ruins of a beautiful synagogue tell a story of a strong community that lived here, where Jesus chose to spend several years. The fields around are still green, some with wild barley, as the area was know for growing wheat and barley.

Following our local guide, we then walked for half a day downhill, surrounded by green fields and wild plum trees. Looking closely at the trees, it’s easy to notice small thorns. Yes, these are no other but the Ziziphus Spina-Christi trees, known as the Christ’s Thorn Jujube. These trees were used for the crown of thorns placed on Christ’s head during His crucifixion.

As we continue to walk, a magnificent view opens in front of our eyes. A blue lake reveals itself in the distance, the Sea of Galilee. This view hasn’t changed throughout the many years that had passed. The Biblical view, the atmosphere, the blessing in the wind. All feels the same.

After several hours we reached the Northern shore of the Sea of Galilee. In this area called Capernaum, after the ancient Hebrew name Kfar Nahum (the Village of Nahum), Jesus chose to live for three years. Here He selected the first Apostles. And more than anything, here he answered prayers and performed miracles.

Prayers where directly answered by Jesus in this holy place. Jesus expelled a demon from a possessed man here (Mark 1:21-27). He cured a Roman officer’s servant of palsy, the centurion is thought to have had the synagogue built (Luke 7:3). Here Jesus also raised the daughter of Jairus from the dead (Luke 8:41-53).

Today, several churches stand in this holy site, referred to in the Bible as Jesus’ Own Town or the Town of Jesus. An old Catholic church in the Western side, alongside a Franciscan monastery. A Greek Orthodox Monastery to the East’ alongside the Church of the 12 Apostles. In between a long path allows believers to walk calmly and absorb the atmosphere. Not very far above, the Beatitude Monastery has beautiful views of the entire Capernaum area.

Capernaum – Jesus’ Own Town

Sitting on the Northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, the ancient village Capernaum – and in Hebrew Nahum’s Village – is referred to in the Bible as Jesus’ “own town”. Today, it is a very important holy pilgrimage site. Going back in time, this is where Jesus chose to live, teach and perform miracles.

Capernaum – Where Jesus Chose to Live and Preach

Jesus was born in Bethlehem, brought up in Nazareth and preached in Jerusalem. But it was the significant Galilean Ministry years which he spent in Capernaum and where he performed many of His miracles. Capernaum became His home and the Bible calls it Jesus’ “own city”.

Matthew 4:13 tells us that Jesus left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum after being tempted in the wilderness. Here He met James, John, Peter, Andrew all fishermen and Matthew a tax collector, five of His future disciples (source).

It was in the Capernaum synagogue that Jesus gave the Sermon on the Bread of Life (John 6:35-59). “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and I will raise him up at the last day”. In this synagogue Jesus would regularly preach (John 6:59, Luke 4:33).

Christian believers who visit Capernaum these days can visit the remains of His old preaching place. Praying here takes a whole new meaning.

Alongside the excavations of the ancient synagogue, archeologists also found the House of St. Peter, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ, and one of the first leaders of the early Church.

Praying at Capernaum, where Jesus had answered prayers and performed miracles during His days on Earth, brings us closer to the divine. Knowing that He answered direct prayers of healing here adds strength to prayers here for centuries.

Capernaum is located in the North of Israel and we can’t visit it on a regular basis. But we do go there every few months and update our community members about the opportunity to write and send prayer requests to be delivered there. Rare Visit and Prayer Request at The Monastery on Top of Mount of Olives

Very few people had ever entered this holy site, which stands on the top of the Mount of Olives for over 125 years. Finally, under rare circumstances, we are honored to share with you photos and impressions from the inside of this ancient monastery. Delivering an urgent prayer request at the heart of the Holy Land brings heartwarming and blissful moments.

The Mount of Olives

The Mount of Olives stands east of the old city of Jerusalem and at 826 meters above see level, it is higher. The mount has served as a cemetery of over 3,000 years. It is the exact location where Jesus ascended to heaven. As such, this holy site has been a place of worship since ancient times and Christians from all over the world view it as a major site of pilgrimage.

The Mount of Olives is named after the olive groves that used to cover it. Today, there are just a few last remaining olive trees still nurtured. But they are hidden and inaccessible behind the walls of the oldest monastery on the mountain, which rarely opens its doors.

The Monastery of the Benedictine Sisters

Since October 1896, over 125 years ago, a lone contemplative monastery stands on the top of the mountain. This is the home of the Congregation of Benedictine Sisters of Our Lady of Calvary. The first seven sisters came to Jerusalem from France and until today French is the common language. These days, five sisters live in the monastery, all of them for over 20 years, rarely exiting the old walls surrounding the place.

Except for urgent medical care, the sisters do not leave the monastery. And apart for an annual visit of pilgrims from Italy, no visitors enter the monastery. The Benedictine monastery stands like a time capsule in the heart of Jerusalem.

The sisters devote their time to prayers, contemplation, and to their expertise – writing beautiful Christian iconography (and they insist that they write and not paint this magnificent art).

This year, due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, the annual visit of pilgrims did not happen, for the first time in many years. The sisters count on these visitors to help with picking the olives and paying a humble donation. This is the main source of income for the monastery.

And thus, under these rare circumstances, very few visitors from Israel were allowed into the monastery. All were Israeli volunteers who came to help with the olives. Among them, a delegate from The Salvation Garden was invited as well, to help with the olives and deliver an urgent prayer request at this holy site.

Prayer Request at The Evangelical Church of Ascension

Upon delivering an urgent prayer request, submitted online by one of The Salvation Garden’s community members, we visited a phenomenal holy site.

In the heart of the Holy Land, in the Eastern part of Jerusalem, stands the Mount of Olives, the exact place from which Jesus ascended to heaven.

Over 130 years ago, in 1898, The German Emperor Wilhelm II visited the Mount of Olives, gasped in the magnificent view of the Old City, and decided to build a hospice. He honored his wife and named the place after here. Until these days, this is location of the Augusta Victoria Hospital.

The Highest Bell Tower around Jerusalem

Inside the hospital compounds stands a glorious church which resembles a German fort, with a 45 meters high bell tower and a great hall. At 850 meters above sea level and about 1,300 meters above the Dead Sea, anyone visiting Jerusalem notices the Augusta Victoria tower.

After climbing about 230 stairs, the views from the top of the tower were breathtaking. Looking at the ancient Old City of Jerusalem from above, one can see all the great churches, the big wall and the entire city.

To deliver the urgent prayer request we also entered the great hall of the church. Sadly, during our visit the church has marked nearly a full year of closure, due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The wonderful mosaics, the amazing ceiling and the huge organ – all were left unseen and untouched for long months. We were honored to walk the isles and speak our prayers softly.

While we would love to deliver more prayer requests at the Augusta Victoria church, it is quite remote and closed most of the time. Yet sometimes we get a special request like this one, who wanted us to pray at the site of ascension, where Jesus ascended to heaven.

Looking up, the ceiling of the church is so beautiful and powerful. Looking forward, towards the location of Ascension, the marble work is astonishing. And on the left side, almost hidden, stands the Altar from the Schneller Syrian Orphanage, dated 1910.

The 5 Most-visited Holy Places in the Holy Land

The historical land of Israel is home to countless Holy Places that are sacred for Christians the world over. For thousands of years, Christians have been visiting Israel to offer a prayer request to seek divine and spiritual enrichment the Lord in some truly historic and important locations.

Every year, hundreds and thousands of visitors throng the myriad sacred sites that can be found all over Israel. Here, we look at some of the most visited Holy Places in the Holy Land.

Church of the Holy Sepulchre

Not only is this site one of the most-visited of Holy Places, but it is also perhaps the holiest one for Christians all over the world. The Church Of The Holy Sepulchre, after all, is the place where Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected.
You will find the ‘Stone of Anointing’ right at the entrance of the church. It is believed that this is where Jesus was consecrated before he was crucified. Inside the church, you will also get to see the Rock of Calvary – this is where the Crucifixion is believed to have taken place. It is enclosed within the Altar of the Crucifixion and is historically the most-visited area in the church.
For a long time now, the Church Of The Holy Sepulchre has been a pilgrim’s favorite for Christians. Located in the northwest quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, the church opens at 5 am and sees a steady stream of visitors on a daily basis. The hike usually takes up 4 to 5 days and the spectacular Galilee landscape is certain to enthral you. You will also get to witness famous places mentioned in the New Testament, like Cana and Zippori. Many young pilgrimages strive to hike this trial during the spring. CAPERNAUM

Famously called “The town of Jesus”, Capernaum is on the must-see locales list for countless Christian tourists.
Capernaum has found its name mentioned several times in the Bible as Jesus lived here for a while during his years of ministry. Capernaum is also the hometown of Jesus’ first apostles: the fishermen Peter, James and John, Andrew, and the tax collector Mathew. It is also here that Jesus is said to have performed several miracles, so it is no surprise that it is considered one of the most popular Holy Places in the Holy Land.
In Capernaum, you will find plenty of churches that honour the life of Jesus. Church of the House of St. Peter and Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Apostles are two of the most famous ones that one must visit here. You can rest assured that you will find the most peaceful environment for sending your prayer request here.

QASR EL YAHUD

Qasr el Yahud is important for Christians as it is the place where Jesus is considered to have been baptized by John the Baptist (Matthew, 3: 13-17). This is also the site where the Israelites crossed the Jordan into the land of Canaan. Located on the road to Jericho off Road 90, the place is considered holy by Christians and is often visited by those who want to revisit their spiritual roots.
After undergoing widespread renovations, the place is now open to the public. Here, you will get to see remains of ancient churches dating as far back as the 5th century. Another thing you should watch for here is the cross-shaped baptismal pool.
Be warned, though: Qasr el Yahud is one of the hottest places in Israel, so you will need to be fully hydrated before you reach here.
While the place isn’t as glamorous or spectacular as some of the other Holy Places mentioned above, people derive immense spiritual value and peace from this holy place.

NAZARETH

Having a population of over 60,000, Nazareth is the largest Arab city in Israel. Jesus, along with his parents, spent a large part of his childhood in Nazareth after returning from Egypt, making it one of the most important Biblical places in the region.
There are several popular holy sites in Nazareth, and the Basilica of the Annunciation is perhaps the most well-known as it is the biggest Christian church building in the Middle East. The Church of St. Joseph is another sacred site in Nazareth which was built over a cave – considered to be the carpentry workshop of St. Joseph.
When in Nazareth, you must also visit Mary’s Well. While this is a public fountain, it is believed that the age-old well was fed by Mary’s Spring.

JESUS AND THE IMPORTANCE HE SAW IN RESURRECTION

Jesus knew he had to be in Jerusalem, he knew he must be killed and resurrect. In this article, we will review the events.

Most of our knowledge about Jesus comes from the apostles and therefore we are bringing here the highlights.

Jesus is giving his disciples a detailed review of the upcoming events:

According to the book of Matthew:

“From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life”. (16:21)

After the crucifixion – Jesus was crucified and died at noon. Upon his death, an earthquake struck the area:

“And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city,” (27:52-53)

Joseph of Arimathea was keen to ensure that the corpse was buried according to the Jewish law, put the body in a new shroud and buried his body in the tomb just before sunset (27:57-60).

Women who followed Jesus had carried and prepared spices for anointing the body of Jesus Christ, and before they went to rest on the weekly Sabbath day, they made sure his tomb was sealed.

“And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulcher” (27:61)

The Resurrection

Then the body of Jesus Christ was in the tomb for three days and nights, and near sunset, he rose with the promise of bringing salvation to humankind.

The women that prepared the spices arrived early in the morning and found that Jesus had already risen,

“And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified” (28:5).

Jesus met his eleven disciples and sent them to us, to the world, with his promise

“I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen” (28:19)

With these last words, we have the legacy of Jesus regarding our Salvation and his all-time presence.

One of the main issues of humanity is related to land and, in the modern era, the lack of it. Real-estate is a pressing issue, especially in the urban areas around the world. It is also where generations of the same family can rest in peace together. Some families can’t afford these buildings and are buried in the same cemetery plots for generations. But as the world population is at its peak, burial becomes an issue. In some of the largest cemeteries, there are vacant spaces only for the next 40-50 years.

But why is burial the common solution? There are two apparent reasons:

The first one is the lack of other available options, and the second one is the Christian tradition and the change in the Catholic canon law.

Only in the late 19^th century, a professor from Italy perfected the cremation model. Once this solution became available, it began to spread across Europe and North America. In the USA, by the beginning of the 20^th century, there were around 20 crematories. By the end of the century, there were over 2,000 crematories.

Revised Canon Law

Even though cremation was available for Catholic Christians since the middle of the 20^th century, its full regulations became clear only last year.

According to the new guidelines, the main concern is the memory of the deceased and keep him as part of the community. This concern is met at best with burial in a cemetery, and therefore other solutions, such as cremation or burial in private locations, are less common.

At the beginning of this article, we found out that burial has turned out to be an issue demanding of new solutions. With the revised canon law, cremation is a new solution that brings with it even further outcomes.

New Traditions

As part of the growing movement of cremation, new traditions are rising. One of them is sending ashes to sacred places, such as the Holy Land. Where can you get started in the Christian life? How can you grow and get to know God better? These are some of the very first questions you need to ask when you begin your relationship with God.

Listen to God

The Bible is the very word and will of God, preserved for us so we can get to know who He is and what He wants for our lives. 2 Timothy 3:16 says that

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

This is why you need to spend time reading the word of God every single day. If you don’t have a Bible that’s easy to understand, you will find online versions that will befit your language.

Answer these two questions for each chapter:

What do I learn about God or Jesus?
Are there things discussed that I should begin practicing or avoid altogether?

This will help you to see that the Bible is very practical to your life today. After you finish John, just keep going all the way to Revelation.

When we read the Bible we learn how God loves us.

“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”
(1 John 3:1).

We learn that we are entirely new people because we’ve invited Jesus to be our Savior and Lord. Read Ephesians 1:3-14 and spend a moment listing all the things that are true of you as a Christian.

Talk to God

Prayer is such a vital aspect of a healthy walk with God. Think of it, we can talk with GOD! Anytime, anywhere, any season of temptation or joy. Hebrews 13:5 tells us that God will never leave or forsake us. That’s good news for some of us who have never known that kind of love and commitment. Well, we do now…because God does not lie or change his mind (Numbers 23:19; Titus 1:2; Hebrews 6:18)

Talk to Others Who Know God

This is simply called fellowship, hanging out with other people who love Jesus. It can be at church, in a Bible study or in a small group. It is for purposes of growing together (Acts 2:46-47)

This is called witnessing. As we can learn from the book – 2 Corinthians 5:17-20,

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation;the old has gone, the new has come!
All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:
that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.”

What is the essence of Salvation in Christianity

“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you belie ve and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” (Romans 10:9-10)

Salvation is a belief which sits right from the heart of the Christian religion. When Jesus Christ, son of God, died on the cross, the Bible dictates that, in the act of doing so, he delivered humankind from pain and suffering.

The Bible states that salvation is a gracious, undeserved gift from God (Ephesians 2:5, 8). It’s available only to those who profess their faith in Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12).

Salvation, also known as ‘deliverance’, promises believers eternal life, full enlightenment and emancipation from the flesh and blood temptations that cause men to falter.

Although the various denominations of Christianity have different opinions on where exactly humanity’s need for salvation stems on, most agree on the doctrine of ‘original sin’ based on the ‘fall of man’ and Adam and Eve’s ejection from the Garden of Eden.

Jesus Christ and salvation

They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” (Acts 16:31)

Christianity revolves around hope and faith in Jesus Christ, the savior. The message of salvation was passed down to the rest of humankind by Jesus’ apostles.

Paul, who was not an original disciple and in fact despised Christianity, encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus. This dramatic meeting inspired Paul to become the Lord’s most fervent supporter. Therefore he was disseminating the message of salvation through scripture, such as:

“But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.

This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” (NIV, Romans 3:21-25)

Jerusalem: the Holy City

According to Zechariah, the Lord promised to protect Jerusalem, to make it an ‘immovable rock for all the nations’ and to ‘shield those who live in Jerusalem, so that the feeblest among them will be like David’.
This, coupled with Luke 24:47:’and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem’ has led Christians to believe that salvation of the Earth will begin in the Holy City.

Is it still a significant place?

Yes, Because of this belief, and because Christ died and was resurrected in the city, Jerusalem has become one of the most significant places on Earth for Christians.

Each year, millions of Christians make the pilgrimage to the empty prayer of Jesus at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in the city to pray. They are seeking solace and redemption in the process.

Many also wish to be buried there, as they believe that the Last Judgment will take place in Jerusalem.
