Prayer Against Coronavirus

The world is in the grip of fear like never before.

We’re all battling the COVID-19: those who are infected those who are in quarantine and in turn the vulnerable groups, such as their families and the people treating the patients; those worried about the spread of the virus and everyone else who is susceptible to catching the infection.

You deserve hope, you deserve blessings.

The Salvation Garden is the carrier of your prayer from your heart to the Holy Land of Christianity.

We live in a strange world, don’t we? There is so much risk and uncertainty all around us that it’s easy to lose a sense of oneness with the Creator.

The deadly COVID-19 virus has affected thousands of people on the planet already. The worst affected are people who’ve had to fight a battle for their lives and lost it. We don’t underestimate the difficulty for caregivers either. The nature of the disease makes it painful for families to see their loved ones being isolated from the world for treatment. The doctors and medical staff treating those affected with the virus are doing God’s work in saving lives, often at the risk of their own. It is time to come together to pray to God and beseech Him to stop the spread of this deadly disease, save the affected and protect the vulnerable.

Seek The Safe Refuge of Prayer

We implore our brothers and sisters from across the world to let their faith in Jesus Christ become stronger in these testing times.

When we pray together, we call out powers higher than our own.

When we pray together, we bring together benevolent energies from all parts of the world together.

When we pray together, we make a silent vow of togetherness and solidarity.

The Salvation Garden implores Christians across the world to believe in the power of prayer.

Ash Wednesday-About what and why?

Ash Wednesday-About what and why?

Ash Wednesday

At some point in the past, you might have shared images or wallpapers to mark and spread the importance of Ash Wednesday. It is one of the most significant and popular holy days in the liturgical calendar. But if you’ve ever wondered about the origins, historical significance, and other trivia around this special day of fasting, prayer, and abstinence, read on to know more about how it all began.

Origins of Lent

Ash Wednesday is observed to mark the onset of the season of Lent, the 40-day period of fasting and self-restraint leading up to Easter Sunday. The day is also known as the “Day of Ashes” because the devout have their foreheads marked with ash drawn in the form of the Cross. The name Day of Ashes has been derived from “Dies Cinerum” found in the Roman Missal; although the exact roots of the day cannot be found, it can be traced back to the earliest existing copies of the Gregorian Sacramentary. It is widely believed that its observance was followed by the Roman Catholics starting in the 6th century; marking the forehead with ashes on Ash Wednesday is likely to have originated during the papacy of Gregory the Great. During the Council of Nicea, Catholics started the tradition of observing Lent in about 325 CE. Although Ash Wednesday is probably most closely associated with Catholics, its significance is recognized by many Christian denominations and sects, including some Baptists, Presbyterians, Episcopalians, Methodists, Anglicans, Lutherans, and the Western Orthodox Churches.

The Evolution of Lenten Lore

According to the Old Testament, ashes were used both as a sign of mortality and humility. In other words, it is seen as a sign of sorrow as well as a symbol of repentance for sins. The Old Testament’s biblical custom also supports the Christian connotation for ashes in the liturgy of Ash Wednesday. In the 10th century, members and followers of the Anglo-Saxon church received ashes on their forehead as a sign of sorrow for their sins and a reminder of mortality. In 1901, the custom was accepted universally throughout the Western church at the Synod of Benevento.

Initially, the ashes were used to signify penance as a matter of one’s private devotion. Subsequently, it gained prominence as a part of the official ritual for repentance in public. The ashes became a motive for fellow Christians to embrace those who had sinned, look at them with sympathy, and pray for their return to the fold. This ritual evolved with the passage of time and the ashes emerged into its present custom of marking the start of the Lenten season on Ash Wednesday. It is also associated with the adoption of the way of “Righteousness” as explained in the Book of Revelation.

Duration of Lent — Then & Now

The roots of the word Lent are embedded in the Middle English word “Lente”; it denotes “springtime”. The season of Lent is observed for a duration of 40 weekdays beginning from Ash Wednesday. It ends on Good Thursday and is observed as a period of fasting and repentance by the Roman Catholics, Eastern churches, and some Protestant churches as well. Sundays are not excluded from the 40-day count of the season. Hence, technically, the season of Lent lasts for 46 days. Initially, the duration of Lent was only for 36 days; subsequently, it was extended to the present duration of 40 days.

Why 40 Days?

An interesting question may come to mind as to why the duration for observing the season of Lent lasts for 40 days. The reason behind it is that the number 40 holds significance for Christians. Christ spent that many days and nights in the desert, during which he was tempted several times to sin against God. Noah witnessed 40 days of rain until the highest mountain was covered in water. The time between Jesus’ resurrection and ascension was 40 days.

Fasting During Lent

Other than staying away from feasting and merriment, fasting is one of the fundamental principles of Lent. According to the Catholic tradition, believers and followers should not consume meat during Lent. However, nowadays, this rule has been simplified and prohibits followers from eating meat only on Fridays. Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 should fast every Wednesday after Ash Wednesday, although one can eat a single regular-sized meal along with two small meals. Elderly people, small children and those who are sick or suffering from an ailment are exempt from keeping a fast.

How Do You Calculate the Date?

The date on which Easter is celebrated each year depends on the full moon of Passover or Paschal. It has been observed that Easter occurs on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25. One can use mathematical formulas to calculate when Easter will fall on any given year. Once the date for Easter is known, one can easily calculate the date when Lent begins. One simply needs to count 46 days (including Sundays) or 40 days (excluding Sundays) from Easter to determine the date of Ash Wednesday.

Interesting Facts About Ash Wednesday

Interesting Facts About Ash Wednesday

You’ve possibly attended mass on Ash Wednesday or seen people with ashes in the shape of a cross on their foreheads. You even abstain from merry-making and practice self-denial of activities you enjoy during the Lenten season. But have you ever wondered about the various aspects associated with one of the most significant dates of the liturgical calendar? If you wish to know more and learn about the interesting yet little-known facts about Ash Wednesday, read on to discover interesting nuggets about this widely observed day of prayer and fasting.

What Do the Ashes Signify and How Are They Obtained?

Although Ash Wednesday is not considered a Holy Day of Obligation, devout Catholics observe the day as a sign of an expression of their faith in Christ. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning or first day of the 40 days of the Lenten season, a six-week period dedicated to fasting, praying and giving donations in preparation for Easter. Believers wear the ashes on their foreheads drawn in the form of a cross, as a sign of humility. The ashes remind followers of the sins of humanity and the reason Christ died on the cross. Ashes are distributed to remind believers of their mortality and ask them to repent and believe in the Lord. During the days of the early Church, Ash Wednesday was marked as the day on which people who had sinned and also those who wished to be readmitted to the folds of the Church would start their atonement.

Traditionally, the ashes are derived from burning palm leaves that were distributed during the previous Palm Sunday, the Sunday before Easter. Palm Sunday is observed to celebrate Christ’s entry into Jerusalem, where believers in Christ the Messiah waved branches of palm trees to commemorate his arrival. Typically, the ashes are mixed with olive oil or Holy Water. The Lenten service and ashes lay emphasis on and uphold the themes of mortality, sin, and God’s ultimate sacrifice of His own Son for the sins of the world.

According to the United Methodist Book of Worship, items burned to obtain the ashes include small cards or pieces of paper with sins or hurtful or unjust characteristics written on them. The cards are taken to the altar and burned along with the palm branches from the year before.

What Can You Not Eat?

According to the Catholic tradition, those who observe Ash Wednesday should abstain from consuming meat during the Lent season. Nowadays, this rule has been relaxed and people stay away from eating meat only on Fridays. People also give up on various pleasurable activities like watching television, and stay away from several items of food and drinking alcohol. Interestingly, a study conducted in 2014 revealed that 72% of people knew about the significance of Lent, and around 88% of those observing Lent had given up some item of food for the 40 days marking the Lenten season. Chocolate emerged as the number one item that people had willingly given up during this period.

The Official Color of Lent

The color violet represents mourning for Christ dying on the Cross and, at the same time, it is also associated with celebrating his Resurrection. Thus, violet is associated with both Christ’s pain and suffering on the Cross, as well as royalty. It is the official or symbolic color of Lent. Violet-colored fabric is used to veil or cover statues, altars, and myriad religious paraphernalia.

When Does the Season of Lent Come to an End?

The season of Lent does not end on Easter; it actually ends on Good Thursday, the day Christ had The Last Supper. Good Friday marks the day Christ died on the Cross, while Easter Sunday commemorates his Rising from the grave – The Resurrection.

Exclusion of Sundays

In the Christian calendar, the duration of the season of Lent is 40 days. The count does not include Sundays. Ash Wednesday falls on a different date every year as it depends on the date on which Easter Sunday is celebrated that year.

What is Laetare Sunday?

Laetare Sunday is observed by some churches as a special date. It falls in the middle of the liturgical season, on the fourth Sunday of Lent. The term Laetare derives its name from “Rejoice, O Jerusalem” or “Laetare Jerusalem”. It is a lighter form of worship that has a cheerful and festive tone as compared to the somber mood associated with other Sundays that fall during the Lenten season. It can also be seen as a preparation for Easter Sunday.

Why do Churches Refrain from Singing Alleluia during Lent?

During the season of Lent, it is customary for churches observing Lent to refrain from singing hymns featuring the Hebrew phrase “Alleluia” or “Praise the Lord”. According to an Evangelical Lutheran Church in the USA, the avoidance of the word “Alleluia” in songs or speeches dates back to the fifth century; the word is avoided during the 40 days of Lent as the season is associated with penance.

Looking for new love? It is worth praying for it

Looking for new love? It is worth praying for it

When you look around your social circle, does it strike you that most of your siblings, cousins, and friends have found the person of their dreams and have settled down to happy matrimony? To your utter amazement, even the ones who were left behind or had sworn to stay away from the bond of marriage have found their ideal partners or soulmates and will soon be ensconced in their love nests. On the other hand, you are picking up the broken pieces of your love life and trying to act normal. As you get on with your life, you realize the emptiness in your world. You yearn for companionship but, at the same time, feel wary of making the same mistake twice. You begin to blame yourself for everything that goes wrong in your life and begin to question yourself for even inane things happening around you. You realize in your heart of hearts that only Divine Grace can help you tide over your past and begin life anew; yet, when you start praying, your soul seems to be restless. If you can identify your predicament but do not know who to turn to, consider sending a prayer request to soothe your restive heart and soul.

THE DAY MY LIFE ENDED (OR SO I THOUGHT)

I had always believed in fairy tale romances and “happily ever after” endings, but when I went through a painful period of heartbreak my world fell apart. Life seemed to drag and I began to lose interest in things and activities I used to enjoy. I became a recluse and would get irritated at the slightest provocation. I prayed to God but, at times, words failed me and tears rolled down my cheeks. In my despair, I thought even the Almighty had forsaken me.

My best friend suggested that I send a prayer request to find hope and a motive in life. Although I had heard accounts of others and their success stories, I was skeptical as to whether it would work for me. Moreover, I was physically as well as mentally too tired to undertake any journey to seek solace. My friend told me to look for places where I can send an online prayer request as it would serve my purpose. Together, we searched the web and asked our friends and relatives for suggestions. I thought: “Why not send a prayer request to the Holy Land and have my prayers answered?” Finally, I zeroed in on a church and decided to look at the options for sending an online prayer request. But, somewhere, at the back of my mind, I still had a nagging feeling as to whether it would work for me. After much trepidation, I decided to send a prayer request and bolster my faith in the Almighty to show me the right path. I wrote down my thoughts and sent them to my chosen church. When I received a video and a digital photograph of my prayer at the church in my email, I felt a great sense of fulfillment; there was a feeling of hope and joy in my heart.

A JOYFUL BLESSING THROUGH PRAYER

A few weeks later, I felt that I could pray with a more focused mind. I did not feel so restless and gradually started picking up the threads of my life. Soon, my parents introduced me to a family friend whom I had not met before. At first, my past came back to haunt me and I thought that I was heading for another disastrous relationship. It was at these times that I would think of the path that the Lord had chosen for me. Slowly I realized that I had met the right person and could foresee a happy future awaiting me. Although I was undertaking a new journey I knew that the Almighty was always with me. He showered his blessings on me and gave me a ray of hope when I thought that everything in my life had come to a standstill. I realized that the path chosen for me was God’s will and I decided to cast aside my apprehensions and travel down the road before me.

There are times when our belief in the Almighty becomes a little shaky and we do not know what to do or which road to take. Sending a prayer request goes a long way in providing us with a direction in troubled times. You can send a prayer request online if incurring the additional expenses of travelling or your present circumstances act as a deterrent. One does not have to be tech-savvy as the process of sending an online prayer request only involves a few simple and easy steps. If you are in distress, it may not always be visible to the outside world; yet, your bleeding heart tears you apart every single day of your life. All you need is a strong belief in the Almighty’s healing powers to come out as a winner.

Church of the Holy Sepulchre

Church of the Holy Sepulchre

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is also known as the Church of the Resurrection or the Church of the Anastasis. It is situated within the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem and contains the two holiest sites in Christianity, the site where Christ of Nazareth was crucified (known as Calvary in Latin and Golgotha in Greek), and Christ’s empty tomb, where he is believed to have been buried and resurrected. According to a historian of Christianity and exegete, Eusebius of Caesarea (also known as Eusebius Pamphili), the Roman emperor Hadrian built a temple dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite in the 2nd century AD to bury the cave in which Christ had been buried. Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor, built the church in 325 AD; Helena, Constantine’s mother, rediscovered the “True Cross” during the building of the church. According to popular belief, the Stone of Anointing, just inside the entrance to the church, is the spot where Christ’s body was prepared for burial by Joseph of Arimathea. If you want to seek blessings but cannot travel to the holy site, you can send a prayer request for success and the fulfillment of your wish.

Church of All Nations

Church of All Nations

The Garden of Gethsemane is considered to be one of the most revered holy sites in Christianity. The word “Gethsemane” finds its origins from the Hebrew expression “Gat Shemen” signifying “olive press’. There are centuries-old twisted and gnarled olive trees which many believe witnessed Christ’s last night before his arrest, imprisonment, and subsequent crucifixion. In the tranquil setting of Gethsemane stands the Church of All Nations. The church is also known as the Basilica of the Agony as Christ prayed here in mortal anguish on the eve of his Passion. The most popular spot is the presbytery as a large fragment of the rock on which Christ is believed to have prayed the night before the Passion can be visible in front of the high altar; the rock is surrounded by a crown of thorns in wrought iron. You can consider sending an online prayer request to this holy site.

Abbey of the Dormition

Abbey of the Dormition

This ancient monastic church, located atop Mount Zion, has a distinctive blue conical roof, rich interiors, four ornamented turrets, and a clock tower. This German Benedictine church commemorates the “falling asleep” (dormition) of the Virgin Mary; it was built by Cologne Archdiocesan architect Heinrich Renard. The church was constructed on land given by the Turkish sultan to the German Kaiser Wilhelm II to mark the Kaiser’s visit to Jerusalem in 1898. In 1910, the church was dedicated by the German Benedictines. There are two levels: the main church and the crypt; the lower-level crypt is believed to be the traditional site of the Virgin Mary’s home and death. There is a circular pillared hall with ambulatories that centers on the Chapel of the Dormition; there is a carved stone figure of the Virgin Mary in repose (dormition) and above it, there is a mosaic in the dome that depicts Christ receiving her soul. You can send a prayer request to find success in your life.

The Prayer That Saved My Life

The Prayer That Saved My Life

PRAYER FOR HEALING

We have read various accounts of Christ’s miracles and how His healing touch cured the devout. But how many of us have experienced these miraculous happenings in our lives? In today’s age of nuclear medicine and the latest advances in surgery and methods of treatment, should we turn to the Supreme Power or simply believe in the advancement of science? Such thoughts cloud our mind time and again. And I was no exception. I had heard about how people who are unable to visit holy places send a prayer request for the sick to a place of their choice or send a prayer request to Israel, but I didn’t give it much thought till a life-altering ailment shattered my very existence.

I had lost my mother a month ago and was trying to come to terms with my loss. I had stopped going out with my friends and refused to be a part of any social or family gatherings; I hated the look of sympathy in people’s eyes. Their words of comfort made me more miserable and wallow in self-pity. I would feel restless and wanted to spend time alone. I had forgotten to live, I merely existed.

One day, I noticed a small lump on my breast. I didn’t think much about it and chose to ignore it. Within a short span of time, I noticed that more lumps had developed. I confided in my maternal aunt, who told me to consult my family physician immediately. I was referred to an oncologist who asked me to undergo tests. My worst fears came true when the test results confirmed that I had breast carcinoma. I had always been a Believer and faithful follower of the Lord, but the first question that came to my mind was: “Why me, God?” I was only 26 years old and had always led a disciplined life. Then how could this happen to me of all people? Neither of my parents had a family history of carcinoma. No one in my family had ever succumbed to the dreadful disease. I kept asking God: “How could I, of all people, be diagnosed with cancer?” Why were mishaps occurring in my life in quick succession?

Although the Scripture advises us to pray, all I wanted to do was cry out to God in despair; but words failed me as I tried to pray. My aunt, who had been a pillar of strength, suggested that I consider sending a prayer request to Israel. This gave rise to more questions in my mind. Does God heal everyone? Why are some people bereft of His healing touch? Will my prayers be answered? Will I be able to receive His healing balm? Although I had been diagnosed with carcinoma, my oncologist had advised further tests to confirm and diagnose the stage of cancer and prepare a plan of treatment. My aunt told me of a few acquaintances who had sent a prayer for the sick and received His blessings. As it was not possible for me to undertake a pilgrimage to the Holy Land due to my health, as well as expenses involved, I decided to give it a thought. With a lot of trepidation in my heart, I surfed the Internet to choose a church and send a prayer request to Israel. I decided to surrender myself to the Lord and trust Him completely to deliver me from my state of hopelessness.

I had never felt so helpless in my life until this juncture, but I had nothing to lose as I turned to the Eternal Power. A few days later, I received a confirmation of acceptance of my prayer request to Israel at the church that I had chosen. I received a video of my prayer request for the sick and felt a glimmer of hope in my body, mind, and spirit. My test results confirmed that, although I had been diagnosed with breast carcinoma, it was in the early stages. As I heaved a sigh of relief, a sense of gratitude filled my mind and heart. I still needed surgery and several weeks of radiotherapy, but I was renewed with the courage to fight and win my battle against the disease.

Many times we face such a predicament in life or see our near and dear ones suffering physically and mentally. Sending a prayer request for the sick can deliver us from our pain or mend our broken heart. Physicians and medicines can provide relief to our bodily ailments, but we need to turn to the Supreme Power for inner healing. We reach out to family and friends in their times of crisis, but we don’t know who to really turn to in our hour of need. Send a prayer request to Israel and receive the Lord’s miraculous healing touch. Remember, you are not alone in your suffering; the Lord is always with you.

This church, also known as the Church of the Anastasis or the Church of the Resurrection, is located within the Old City of Jerusalem. The holy site is significant as it is believed to be the site where Christ was crucified; it also houses Christ’s empty tomb. In 325 AD, Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor, built the church; Constantine’s mother Helena discovered the “True Cross”. It is widely believed that the Stone of Anointing marks the spot where Joseph of Arimathea prepared Christ’s body for burial. The main altar contains the Rock of Calvary; it is the most visited spot in the church. Traditionally, the Calvary is believed to be the site of Christ’s crucifixion. Garden Tomb

The Garden Tomb

The Golgotha or “the place of the skull” is believed to be the site of Christ’s crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. Further excavations have revealed religious markings (signs of Christian Burials) dating back to the days of Christ. An anchor-cross on the outside wall and a cross carved into the rock face above the tomb were discovered. Two painted crosses were found inside the tomb with Byzantine markings dating back to the 5th or 6th centuries; the crosses were accompanied by Greek letters which referred to Christ as the Alpha and Omega. You can send a prayer request and let His holy touch deliver you from your physical and mental pain.

Church of All Nations

There are olive trees dating back hundreds of years at this holy site; popular belief suggests that these trees stood witness when Christ prayed in mortal pain on the eve of his Passion. Hence the Church of All Nations is also known as the Basilica of the Agony. The tympanum is decorated with a modern mosaic; it represents the bond between Christ and Mankind. The lunette in the apse features a mosaic depicting Christ in agony being comforted by an Angel. St. Peter’s Church

St. Peters Church

This church faces the West, as opposed to most other churches, which face East. The site where the Roman Catholic Church of St. Peter is situated has been revered as a Christian center for more than a thousand years. A church and an inn for pilgrims were constructed here in the 16th century, probably on the ruins of another church. The construction of the present church was finished in 1894. There is a wooden pulpit inside the church carved in the form of a fruiting tree. The arms of Christ and Francis are crossed over the Tau Cross. Below the Franciscan Cross is the cross of the Holy Land, a Greek cross in red with a white background and four similar crosses, one in each quadrant; it is also known as the “Jerusalem Cross”. In Aramaic, Peter’s name is referred to as Cepha, the word for “rock”; legend goes that Christ had told St. Peter at Banias that he is the “rock” upon which his church would be built. When this church was built, the cross was fastened upon a rock brought from Banias. You can send a prayer to receive the much-needed balm for your aching mind and body.

If you are physically unable to travel to your chosen destination to seek blessings from the Supreme Power, sending a prayer for the sick could give you a glimmer of hope and the much-needed will to overcome your feeling of helplessness. Read on to find out more about the places you can reach out to and send a prayer request to the Holy Land.

The Holy Sepulchre Entrance

Church of the Holy Sepulchre

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, also known as Holy Sepulchre, is believed to be the place where Christ was crucified, buried and resurrected. As early as the 2nd century, the hill where the church is located has been a site of worship; the first building that was built here was a temple dedicated to the worship of Aphrodite. One can see the Stone of Unction, which marks the spot where Jesus’s body was prepared for burial, the Angel’s Stone (a piece of the rock used to seal Christ’s tomb), and the tomb itself. The New Testament claims that Christ was crucified at Golgotha, the place of the skull. Constantine the Great constructed the first church on the site. Saint Helena, Constantine’s mother, discovered the relic of the “True Cross” of Christ’s Crucifixion in 326 C.E. You can send a request for a prayer for the sick to this revered site and seek Christ’s blessings for you and your loved ones.

The Garden Tomb

Garden Tomb

The Garden Tomb is located outside the city walls of Jerusalem; its proximity lies close to the Damascus Gate. Popular belief suggests that the site, also known as Gordon’s Calvary, was the place of Christ’s burial and resurrection. Although the tomb was discovered in 1867, archaeologists have traced its origins to 9th-7th BC, corresponding with the era of the Old Testament. The scriptures mention “Golgotha,” which means “skull’ in Aramaic, as the site of Christ’s crucifixion. If you cannot undertake the journey to this holy site due to poor health, you can send a prayer for the sick and receive the Lord’s divine blessings.

Church of All Nations

In 1924, the Church of All Nations, also known as the Basilica of the Agony, was constructed on the remains of a 4th-century basilica and a chapel built by the Crusaders in the 12th century. The church is located at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem alongside the Garden of Gethsemane facing the walls of the Old City. The bubble-domed roof gives the structure a distinct Byzantine appearance. A magnificent mosaic spread across a row of Corinthian columns depicts Christ as an intermediary between God and humankind. The church marks the place where Christ prayed on a section of the bedrock in the Garden of Gethsemane on the eve of his arrest and crucifixion. If the expense of travel acts as a deterrent or it is not possible to leave your ailing near and dear one alone, you can send a prayer for the sick.

Abbey of the Dormition

The name “Dormition” means “coma”, and the neo-Romanesque monastic church located on Mount Zion commemorates the Virgin Mary’s “eternal sleep” and ascension to heaven. In the early 20th century, the complex was constructed over the ruins of a Byzantine church; hence, it is also known as Hagia-Maria-Sion Abbey. In 1898, German emperor Wilhelm II built the church on a piece of land received from the Ottoman sultan during his visit to the Holy Land. In 1910, the church was inaugurated and stands out as a major landmark with its round shape, lead-covered conical roof, four turrets, and bell tower. If you are too weak to travel to this holy site, you can send a prayer request to the Holy Land and let the Lord’s healing powers touch you.

St. Peters Church

St. Peter’s Church

The church, built in 1931, is located on the eastern slope of Mount Zion outside the Old City of Jerusalem. The site is believed to be the palace of the High Priest Caiaphas and the place where Christ was arrested and imprisoned. It commemorates the triple denial of Christ’s apostle Peter, his repentance, and reconciliation with Jesus after the Resurrection. You can visit the church from Monday to Saturday from 8.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. or send a prayer request for the sick.

You can travel to these holy sites or send a prayer request to the Holy Land to regain your physical as well as mental strength. A prayer for the sick can soothe your frayed nerves or give you the courage to soldier on.

LIGHTING A CANDLE IN HOLY PLACES AT THE HOLY LAND

Light a candle in Jerusalem

You wake up and go about your daily grind both at work and home with a smile on your face. But there are moments when your weary soul seeks rest and ponders over your achievements and failures. Your soul yearns for a bit of divine intervention for boosting your morale and giving you the inner strength to soldier on. A prayer request may be the answer and work wonders for your troubled soul. Learn more about some of the holy sites you can consider reaching out to, to send a prayer request in Israel.

HISTORY

Traditionally, lighting candles is an important practice in Catholic churches, communities, and homes. Its origins date back to the Old Testament where an oil lamp was lit to signify the burning of an eternal flame. The devout prepare an altar in the temple of the Lord and burn incense, offerings and lampstands or candles to worship God and offer prayers of thanksgiving and implore His forgiveness for every sin.

The New Testament upholds the sanctity of this light in Paul’s Letter to the Hebrews. Christians believe that a candle symbolizes the light of God or Christ. The New Testament upholds Christ’s followers creating light to signify communion with Him as well as serve as offering to God. Since these lights symbolize Christ and the Light of the world, the devout that congregate in prayer illumine their lives and those for whom they pray.

Candles are lit at the altar in memory of near and dear ones, during prayer, at Mass, at funerals and liturgical processions, and at evening prayer ceremonies. Devotees light candles before the Tabernacle to show reverence as well as signify God’s presence in the Blessed Sacrament.

The definition, meaning, and emblem of candles as a symbol of Christianity can be traced back to the Easton Bible Dictionary. One can find the frequent usage of the term “lamp”. The Hebrew word referring to “any kind of candle, lamp or torch” denotes a figure of conscience, a Christian example, and prosperity.

SIGNIFICANCE

According to Christian theology, Christ is recognized as the light of the world. Hence lighting a candle is associated with salient features of Christianity like Cleansing and Purification of Impurities. Devout Christians believe that lighting candles can keep one safe from all the inequities of the earth, and witchcraft.

The flame emanating from the candles signifies obedience, while the heat that is emitted portrays humility. A prayer request in Israel for lighting a candle goes a long way in strengthening your beliefs and devotion.

Candles are an integral part of your silent communion with God. Whether you are praying for the old and ailing, your family, or anyone close to your heart, lighting candles in a church is a tangible sign of faith. When you light a candle, it burns as a symbol of the divine fire present in all of us; it indicates a flaming passion that warms us and makes us a part of that Light symbolizing Christ. The practise of lighting a candle for the Virgin Mary in a Church or Chapel of a Saint is performing an act of love towards God, Christ, and his Holy Mother. The Holy Sepulchre and Church History

“And they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, The place of a skull,” (Matthew 27:33)

Jesus was crucified at Golgotha, known in the New Testament (Matt. 27:33–35; Mark 15:22–25; John 19:17–24) as “the place of the skull”. This location lay outside the perimeter of the city walls at the time and was an abandoned stone quarry.

Around a decade later, a wall was built which enclosed the site inside what we know today as Jerusalem’s Old City.

Stone of Anointing (Stone of Unction)

Stone of Anointing

Another point of interest inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is the so-called Stone of Unction, which was the spot where Joseph of Arimathea prepared Jesus for Burial.

It is customary for pilgrims to kneel and kiss the stone on their arrival at this location within the church. This tradition stems from John 19:40:

“Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury”.

The kneeling action is also represented in the large mosaic above the Stone of Unction, which depicts subjects kneeling alongside the stone.

How was it discovered?

The tomb itself was discovered in the process of building a church ordered by Roman Emperor Constantine I. This then became the first Church of the Holy Sepulchre which could be accessed by a set of steps which rose from one of Jerusalem’s main streets.

Early pilgrims would have walked through a basilica and the ‘holy garden which contained ‘the rock of Golgotha, before reaching the Holy Sepulchre.

The Church starts to form around the Stone of Anointing

A small building was built around the tomb, which was originally exposed. The relic of the cross of Jesus, another important feature of the church, is said to have been discovered by Saint Helena, Constantine’s mother, in 326.

In the 11th century, the Chapel of the Invention of the Cross was founded, in a cave deep beneath the basilica’s ruins, which is still present today.

A number of destructions and restructurings have taken place at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, including a 614 ransacking by a Persian Army, a 966 fire which destroyed the dome in anti-Christian riots, and a complete dismantling by fanatical Arab leader Fatimid caliph al-Hakim in 1009.

After being rebuilt by Constantine IX Monomachus, the Byzantine emperor – after the first Crusade, ending in 1099, freed it up as a place of worship – it was reconsecrated 50 years later to the day. While work has been carried out periodically over the years, the post-Crusade Church of the Holy Sepulchre is much like the one which stands today.

Today pilgrims often light a candle, make a prayer or take part in a procession around the site. The experience is very emotional for some, evocative for others, and gives Christians the chance to communicate with God and ask for what is in their hearts. For those who are far away, we are offering the pilgrims experience as an online option.

The History of the Holy Sepulchre and the Church

Love, how many ways do we have to love?

Love, How Many Ways Do We Have To Love?

What has Jesus taught his disciples about love?

In the Gospel according to Matthew 5:43-48, Jesus said,

“But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you in order that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax-gatherers do the same? And if you greet your brothers only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect”.

Is there a new way to love our enemies?

Pray for your enemies

Praying for your enemy opens you up to the work of the Holy Spirit in your heart.

Forgive your enemies

Loving your enemy does not mean:

  • You have to add them to your Christmas list, or
  • make them your best friend, or
  • excuse their actions

it means you forgive them, with the knowledge that God is both merciful and just.

How would you feel?

Loving your enemies and praying for those who persecute you is liberating. You can find yourself in pitched battles with the people who hate you, always seeking the upper hand, always noting who’s up and who’s down, and always analyzing every slight. Praying for them can make you feel even better and change your attitude towards them.

So what Jesus is telling us is hard, but it’s not impossible. And it’s necessary, too, because ultimately he is inviting us not only to forgiveness and charity but to something else: freedom and happiness
